The Complete Guide to Solara Resort Villas

How far is Solara Resort from Disney World?

Aerial view of Solara Resort villa neighbourhood with lake and palm trees, Orlando, Florida

Solara is down in the ChampionsGate corner of Kissimmee, so Disney is the close one. Reckon on about 8 miles to the nearest gate and a 20 to 25 minute drive, traffic depending.

  • All four Disney parks land in that 20 to 25 minute window from the main entrance.
  • The catch is US-192 at park-opening time, so on a big morning it pays to set off early.
  • Universal is the longer haul, more like half an hour to 40 minutes up I-4, with SeaWorld a touch nearer.
  • For the airport run, give yourself the best part of an hour back to MCO on FL-417.
  • One thing to plan for is the lack of a resort shuttle, so a hire car is part of the deal here.

Does Solara Resort have a FlowRider?

FlowRider surf simulator at Solara Resort, Orlando, Florida

Yes, and it's the thing that sets Solara apart. The Solara Club has a FlowRider surf simulator, which you won't find at many villa resorts, with instructors there to get you up on your feet.

  • Picture a stationary wave you ride on the spot, the same rig surf schools train on.
  • Teenagers and adults get the most out of it, and nearly everyone wipes out at first, because it's harder than it looks.
  • The younger ones usually end up watching from the side, which is no bad thing.
  • Whether it's in the standard clubhouse pass or a paid session can vary, so check when you book.
  • Lessons tend to be on offer too, though it's worth asking if they cost extra.
  • School holidays get busy, so go first thing if you can.

Is the Solara Resort pool free with villa hire?

The heated Grand Pool, the splash pad, the teens' area and the sports facilities all come with resort access for every villa and townhome guest. Most of what you'll use day to day is in the price, with a few exceptions worth knowing first.

  • In the price: the Grand Pool, splash pad, playground, teens' area, gym, running track and the sports courts.
  • You'll get wristbands on arrival, so make sure the guest count is right when you book.
  • What you pay extra for: the restaurant, the Tiki Bar, the café and a cabana if you want one.
  • The FlowRider sits in the grey area, so check whether your pass covers it.
  • Hours shift with the season, worth a quick look if you're coming in the quieter months.
  • Your own villa pool is a separate thing from all this, included but not heated unless you add it.

Does Solara Resort have a restaurant?

Solstice bar and restaurant interior at Solara Resort, Orlando, Florida

Solara feeds you better than most villa resorts. On-site you've got a proper restaurant, a poolside Tiki Bar, a café and an ice-cream parlour.

  • The main one is Solstice Bar & Grill, inside the clubhouse.
  • The Tiki Bar is where you end up poolside, for a drink and something casual.
  • Morning coffee or a later ice cream both have you covered before an early start.
  • None of it's in the villa rate, so you settle up as you go.
  • If you'd rather cook, we can have a grocery shop waiting at the resort.
  • And Publix and Walmart are only 5 to 10 minutes out by car.

Few villa resorts put this much food on-site, and you can see where it lands against the rest in our look at how the Orlando resorts compare.

What size villas does Solara Resort have?

Solara goes from townhomes right up to 9-bedroom villas, though the bulk of the homes sit somewhere between 5 and 9 bedrooms.

  • Townhomes are the small end, fine for a couple or a young family.
  • The 5-beds are the workhorses, sleeping 10 to 12, and suit a mid-size family well.
  • Step up to a 6 or 7-bed for 12 to 14 people, usually with a games room and a bigger deck.
  • The 8 and 9-beds are the ones for bigger parties, with several suites, a cinema room and more space outside.
  • Most follow the same shape: two storeys, private pool, screened lanai, open-plan downstairs.
  • The 8 and 9-beds go quickly, so get in early for summer or Christmas.

Do Solara Resort villas have a heated pool?

Private screened pool and hot tub with sun loungers at Solara Resort villa, Orlando, Florida

Every Solara villa comes with its own pool, but it's unheated to start with. If you want it warm you add heating at booking, and in the summer heat most people don't bother.

  • The pool's just for your group, never shared.
  • Heating isn't baked into the rate, so flag it when you book if you want it on.
  • We'll get you the heating cost for each villa as we shortlist.
  • June through September the sun does the job, so heating rarely makes sense.
  • Come November to March it's worth having for an early or late swim.
  • The screened lanai keeps a bit of the warmth overnight, and keeps the bugs off while it's at it.

Does Solara Resort have a spa?

Screened pool and spa with fire pit at Solara Resort villa, Orlando, Florida

There's no treatment spa at Solara, so don't expect therapists or beauty rooms. The "and Spa" in the name is about the hot tubs: a jacuzzi spa over at the clubhouse, and a private one on some of the villas.

  • No wellness centre or treatment rooms on the resort.
  • The clubhouse does have a jacuzzi spa pool with sun decking, open to everyone staying.
  • Some villas add their own hot tub on the screened deck.
  • It's only a certain set of homes, not every villa.
  • The cooler evenings from October to March are when you'll use it most.
  • Give us your group size and we'll pull out the hot-tub villas for you.

Do Solara Resort villas have a games room?

Sports themed games room with pool table and lounge area in Orlando villa, Florida

Most villas from 6 bedrooms up have their own games room, and the standard at Solara beats the older resorts, since these were built for it rather than crammed into a garage.

  • You'll find one in most 6-bed-and-up homes, less so in the 5-beds and townhomes.
  • Typically that's a pool table, air hockey, foosball and a big screen.
  • The bigger villas often throw in arcade machines or table tennis.
  • They're proper rooms, purpose-built, and it shows.
  • A few of the larger homes have a separate cinema room on top.
  • Say the word at enquiry if you want both and we'll find the right one.

Is Solara Resort good for large groups?

Living room with sofas and flat screen TV in Solara Resort villa, Orlando, Florida

For a group of 15 or more, Solara is one of the easier resorts to run. The big villas, the on-site food and the shared facilities mean it mostly looks after itself, with no shuttling everyone out for every meal.

  • The 8 and 9-beds take the largest groups, and most reunions slot into a single home.
  • If you've got more, we can put you in two villas close together.
  • Solstice and the Tiki Bar mean you're not solving the dinner question every night.
  • For a group meal in, a private chef can be sorted through the 5 Star Villa Holidays team.
  • And between the FlowRider, the pool, the running track and the courts, there's enough on-site to fill the down days.

For the really large parties, our largest Orlando mansion rentals cover the highest-capacity homes around.

Are Solara Resort villas pet friendly?

Aerial view of Solara Resort villa with front porch and driveway, Orlando, Florida

Most Solara villas won't take pets, and that's a resort and management-company call here, not the owner's. If you've got to bring the dog, you'll do better outside the gated resorts.

  • Most homes aren't pet friendly, which is the norm across the managed resorts.
  • A handful might take a small dog, but you'd need it in writing first.
  • Where it's allowed, there's usually a deposit and limits on breed and weight.
  • Tell us up front, so you get a straight answer instead of a maybe.
  • And bear in mind the heat and the gated setup make a dog harder work here than on a UK trip.

If that's a sticking point, our non-gated houses for rent in Orlando are usually more relaxed about pets.

Is Solara Resort good for young children?

Kids pool with water play structure and slide at Solara Resort, Orlando, Florida

Solara is an easy one with little ones. Being gated and walkable, with the splash pad and clubhouse right there, takes a lot of the daily faff out of it, and there's no through-traffic to worry about.

  • The splash pad is the gentle bit, shallow water and fountains for the smallest, with an eye kept on them.
  • The gated streets keep the traffic out, which is a weight off with small children.
  • Themed bedrooms come with most family villas, and the 3 to 10s love them.
  • Cot availability varies, so confirm it at booking rather than assuming.
  • Sort a car seat before you fly, since the Florida hire cars almost never throw one in.
  • The nearest paediatric care, AdventHealth Celebration, is about 10 minutes away.
